Space Camp scholarship applications available

The Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial NASA Space Camp Scholarship application is due March 10.

The scholarship is open to youth in sixth through ninth grades who are the children of active-duty military parent. Applicants must submit a hand-written essay stating why he or she should be selected, evidence of patriotism, future goals, community service, and "after camp" intentions, two letters of recommendation with contact information, and complete and submit application by the deadline. For more information visit: www.militarychild.org/files/pdfs/SpaceCamp_Application.pdf

NASA Space Camp is a place where kids come together for a journey they will never forget. Each child learns about astronauts and space travel, and also experiences something even more important: developing bonds of friendship. This is a microcosm of the life of military children. They travel, they learn, and they quickly bond into lifetime friendships.

It is fitting then that the Military Child Education Coalition has created a Space Camp scholarship in memory of one of its brightest and finest children, Bernard Curtis Brown II. Bernard, the 11-year- old son of Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Bernard Curtis Brown, was killed Sept. 11, 2001, when the hijacked airliner on which he was a passenger, crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. At the time, he was on his way to California to represent his school at a National Geographic event.

CYSS free online tutoring

Child, Youth and School Services offers free online tutoring. Need homework help, have a paper due, want to take a practice test, need to speak directly to a live tutor in a one-to-one, 24/7 online classroom? These services and many others are available through Tutor.com, a free service for families and spouses of active, wounded, reserve component, National Guard and Army civilians (including survivors). Students of any age, in any grade – including kindergarten through 12th grade, college students and adult students – can get help in math, science, English and social studies.

How does it work? Army-affiliated students submit a one-time registration to obtain their CYSS pass code. Students can then use it to log in from home or from the CYSS Youth Technology Lab. They enter the grade level and subject they need help in and are then connected to the first available subject expert tutor in an online classroom. Students and tutors work together in an online classroom using controlled chat and an interactive white board. Students can send computer files, such as essays, to the tutor for review and assistance. They can also share educational websites. Log on to www.myarmyonesource.com/cyss_tutor  to find out more about this free service for military families and to register.

For more information, contact CYSS Youth Education Support Services at bliss.yess@conus.army.mil or 568-2784.
