Underwood golf pro honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

In recognition of his years of dedication to the game he loves, Bobby Kaerwer, head golf professional and manager at the George V. Underwood Golf Complex, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sun Country Section of the PGA of America.
“You’re very honored to be recognized by your peers,” said Kaerwer, who has been at Underwood since 1971. “But, you know, if you’re doing the things that you’re doing – if you’re doing it to be recognized, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. That’s the way I feel about it.
“I mean, I’m doing my job, and my job as a golf professional is to promote the game of golf,” he continued. “That’s what my job is, and I have to do it for everybody. I have to do it for men, I have to do it for women, I have to do it for kids … but it’s something I want to do.”
While just “doing his job,” Kaerwer has, according to the Sun Country Section, “arguable had as big of an impact on golf and golf professionals as anyone in the history of the Sun Country PGA.” This impact includes having held every office in the section, including the presidency. On the national level, Kaerwer has served on the PGA National Education Committee and the PGA National Apprentice Committee, and was at one time a faculty member in a program that provided instructors to assistant golf professionals who aspired to become members of the PGA of America. He was also instrumental in getting a professional golf management program instituted at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
Kaerwer has been elected to the El Paso Golf Hall of Fame, has won numerous national and section awards, and is a featured teacher in Golf Magazine’s South Central Region.
“I guess that’s kind of it in a nutshell,” said Kaerwer, who graduated from Texas Tech University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army in 1967. “I have been very fortunate over the years to have some great people who have worked alongside me.
“My staff inside the golf shop has been a great staff,” he continued. “The Golden Tee has been one of those facilities that has been well-received by everybody, also, and then I’ve got great office support in Kris [Woodson] and Shirley [Rehrig] inside. I’ve been very, very fortunate to be surrounded by some good people.”
