Video contest: What Family and MWR Means to Me

Are you handy with a video camera? Dying to try out that new digital recorder you picked up last year? Then do we have the contest for you: It’s the first-ever Fort Bliss Family and MWR video contest! We’re looking for your videos to tell us what Family and MWR means to you. The winner of the Family and MWR video contest will receive a 42-inch high-definition television, courtesy of Freedom Furniture.

The contest is open to active-duty, Reserve and National Guard service members from any branch of service, stationed at Fort Bliss, and their family members age 18 and older, with valid military ID. Contestants must be in amateur status and cannot be professionally employed as a videographer (i.e., with the Public Affairs Office, etc.).

Video submissions must be at least 29 seconds in duration, and no more than 59 seconds in duration, and should follow the theme “This is What Family and MWR Means to Me.” Videos may not depict Soldiers in their day-to-day activities during duty hours. Videos may not include any intentional logo placement, although a logo on a building in the background, for instance, is acceptable.

All materials must be the original composition of the participant. Video submissions that include YouTube or any other like footage source will be disqualified. This includes photography, music and other media, as well.

To enter, upload your completed video to your YouTube account, then copy the link to your video and send it to blissmwr@gmail.com. Include in the email your name, your unit or sponsor’s unit information, your email address and a daytime telephone number, along with the times it will be best to contact you. Submissions will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Monday, February 20.

Hiking and snowshoeing in the Gila National Forest

Bouldering at Hueco Tanks

Indoor soccer tournament

The Fort Bliss indoor soccer team will host an indoor soccer tournament February 4-5 at Biggs Gym. The tournament is open to all teams, both military and from the surrounding community.

Each team is guaranteed three games. The top two teams will receive team trophies. The tournament will follow a group play into single elimination bracket format.

Super Bowl party at Strike Lounge

The Employment Readiness Program at Army Community Service will host the Fort Bliss Hiring Fair Tuesday, February 7. ACS Resilience Training

Are you a tennis ball or an egg? Do you bounce back or do you crack? Learn to bounce back when the stressors of everyday life start getting you down by attending the ACS Resilience Training. The training will enhance your effectiveness and well-being by teaching you the skills to build mental toughness, learn what your character strengths are, build strong relationships, and lastly how to hunt the good stuff, focusing on the positive rather than the negative.

Fire Brand Boot Camp at Ironworks Gym

Do you need a kick in the pants to reach your fitness goals? Join the fitness professionals at Ironworks Gym for the Fire Brand Boot Camp, and see results through functional training. Ironworks Gym is located at Bldg. T20700 Anzio Way on East Fort Bliss.

The six-week course meets from 6-7 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday from February 7-March 15. Registration costs $60 per person and is open to individuals age 18 and older. Looking for a thrill? Southwest Adventure's new Lunch Rocks! program provides one. These Thursday trips run a half-day each and visit some of the best climbing locations in the country, conveniently located near Fort Bliss.

Fort Bliss' Got Talent: Every Thursday in February

The stage is set, and our contestants are ready to shine. Watch the best and brightest entertainers on Fort Bliss compete for a $500 grand prize during Fort Bliss' Got Talent, every Thursday in February. Join us February 9, February 16 and February 23 at 6:30 p.m., at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Bldg. 11199 on East Fort Bliss. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Fort Bliss’ Got Talent, winner of the Army Festival of the Arts’ best variety entertainment production in 2010, is a four-week-long competition showcasing some of the installation’s best performers. Come out and support your favorite contestant!

The audience is just as important as the talent in this competition; while each week’s performances will be evaluated by guest judges, the audience plays an integral role because their votes have the power to influence the outcome. Military units also have the chance to win: The unit with the most participation over all four weeks will win a $500 unit spirit award.

Border Rumble boxing smoker

Family and MWR Sports and El Paso Golden Gloves present the Border Rumble boxing smoker Friday, February 10 at Stout Gym. Bouts will begin at 6 p.m. Spectators are welcome and entry is free.

Active-duty Military with five or fewer amateur fights can participate. Both male and female participants are welcome.  A bout will consist of three, one-minute rounds. Sixteen-ounce gloves will be used in the lighter weight classes and 18-ounce gloves for all other weight classes. Bouts will be determined after weigh-ins. The event is sanctioned by the USA Boxing Border Association.

Participants need to complete all requirements before allowed to fight. Requirements include recent physical, pre-fight physical and a sworn statement that Soldier has five or fewer amateur fights signed by commanding officer. Weigh-ins will take place Thursday, February 9 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Stout Gym.

Valentine's Day Wine and Dinner

Enjoy a night of fine dining, entertainment and dancing at the Centennial's Valentine's Day Wine and Dinner Friday, February 10. Treat your someone special to a romantic evening in our intimate atmosphere. Enjoy a four-course dinner with wines specially chosen to complement and enhance each dish. The evening begins at 7 p.m.

The first course will feature a crab wonton, followed by a walnut mandarin salad with raspberry vinaigrette. For the entree, dine on filet mignon stuffed with portobello mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes and char-grilled asparagus. End the meal with a chocolate-strawberry mousse-tini.

Framing classes at Framing Bliss

Learn from certified instructors how to professionally frame your artwork, diplomas or certificates. Framing Bliss offers framing classes every other Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Upcoming classes include:

  • March 10 and 24
  • April 7 and 21

Classes are open to DoD ID card holders and their guests and cost $30 per person, or $25 each for two people. Class fees cover all required materials and instruction. Patrons must register and pay for classes by the Friday before the class date.

Valentine's Day Brunch

Ready to play cupid? Treat your Valentine to a delicious array of breakfast and lunch items during Valentine's Day Brunch at the Centennial. Sunday, February 12, our special holiday brunch will feature all your favorites, including an omelet bar and carving stations. Black History Month showcase: "A Celebration of our Journey"

Family and MWR presents its first-ever Black History Month showcase at 7 p.m. Friday, February 17 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Bldg. 11199 Sgt. E. Churchill St. on East Fort Bliss.

"A Celebration of Our Journey: From Africa to America" is free and open to the public. Join Family and MWR for a night of ethnic-style dancers, poetry readings, dramatic interpretations, singers and a fashion show.

A traditional "Soul Food" dinner buffet will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. for $9.95 per person.

Children are welcome to attend this family-friendly event; however, there will be a special CDC opening to provide care for children registered with Child, Youth and School Services. Regular hourly rates will apply.

Military Saves Conference

The Financial Readiness Program at ACS invites you to the Military Saves Conference from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, February 24 at the Family Resilience Center, Bldg 250 Club Road on Fort Bliss.

Military Saves is a national financial readiness campaign with the goal of increasing household savings for short and long-term needs and decreasing consumer debt. We have an array of sessions scheduled to address consumer debt, credit repair, budgeting, saving, investing and more. We will have financial counselors offering one-on-one budget/coaching sessions and an exhibit hall with many organizations that provide free resources and services to take your financial well-being to the next level.

Financial Makeover Challenge

Do you worry about how you are going to pay your rent, car note, groceries and the rest of the bills that keep showing up in your mailbox? Are you ready to stop stressing over money? We invite you to participate in the Financial Readiness Program’s 2012 Financial Makeover Challenge. The challenge is a six-month program that teaches Soldiers and families to budget and manage their money in a way that sheds bad financial habits and develops habits that take control of their finances. FRP’s coaches will help the participants overhaul how they manage their finances with regular coaching sessions and classes through the six-month period. Participants will learn how to reduce debt, prepare a budget, and start a savings plan that will empower them to make decisions about their lifestyle in order to attain a successful financial makeover. Therapeutic yoga session

Clear stress from your body and mind during a special therapeutic yoga session offered by Team Bliss Sports and Fitness.

The class costs $15 per person and will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 29 at Stout Gym. There are 20 seats available.

Instructor Mega Sullivan DeRosa will teach participants to support deep healing and improved well-being while giving their bodies the gift of a mini retreat. Therapeutic yoga is a blend of restorative poses, gentle yoga, breat awareness and guided meditation that encourages your body to release and your mind to open.

Youth Sports tennis season

Registration for Team Bliss Youth Sports spring tennis begins February 1 and is open through Wednesday, February 29. Youth Sports tennis is open to boys and girls ages 8-18. Registration costs $50 for the first child and $42 for each additional child.

The season is anticipated to run from March through April. This is a non-competitive league and the 50 percent participation rule is in effect. Parents must attend a sportsmanship class before a child is eligible to participate in the Youth Services league. Contact Youth Sports for the next available session. If you have already attended this class within the past year, please show your card when registering your child for Youth Sports.

The Team Bliss Sports and Fitness Spring Open Softball League will being play Saturday, March 3. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 22 at Soto Gym.

Civilian Fitness Program applications due March 9

The Civilian Fitness Program is an opportunity for Army civilians to develop and continue healthy lifestyle changes. The six-month, structured program is open only to civilian employees of Fort Bliss.

The six-month program begins Monday, March 26 and involves pre- and post-program fitness assessments and one-hour workouts three times a week. Guidance will be provided on exercise program design, nutrition, and aerobics, but the actual program will be determined by the participants. Group fitness classes offered include TRX, gravity, yoga, pilates, spin and more, all on a rotating schedule.

Active Military Families Resilience Training

St. Patty's Day 6-Mile Race

Lace up your running shoes and be sure to wear green when you take part in the St. Patty's Day 6-Mile Race at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at Soto Gym, located at Bldg. 20751 Constitution Drive on East Fort Bliss.

The 6-Mile Saint Patty's Day Run is open to all, including the El Paso community. The first 200 runners registered will receive T-shirts. The first 100 registered are guaranteed sizes.

Age groups are 19-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-over. Early registration is now open at both Stout and Soto Gyms and online at www.active.com. Early registration is free for active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss and costs $20 for all other runners. Early registration closes Wednesday, March 14. Late registration will be held on-site from 7-7:50 a.m. the day of the event. Late registration costs and additional $10 per runner.

Army Strong Freestyle Wrestling Tournament

Team Bliss Sports and Fitness will host the Army Strong Freestyle Wrestling Tournament Saturday, March 24 at Soto Gym. Weigh-ins begin at 8 a.m. and matches begin at 9 a.m.

The tournament is open to all wrestlers ages 8 and up. Registration costs $10 per wrestler.

Medals will be awarded to first- through fourth-place finishers in each division. All competitors age 10 and under will receive medals.

10K Post Championship

The Fort Bliss Intramurals 10K Post Championship will take place at 6:30 a.m. Friday, April 6 at Soto Gym on East Fort Bliss. On-site registration begins at 5:30 a.m. the day of the event.

The 10K run is open to all military ID holders and DoD/DA civilians. Registration is free for active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss and costs $10 for all others. Age groups are 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 and over.

This is a Commander's Cup event. Only active-duty results contribute to Commander's Cup standings.

Team Bliss Youth Sports track and field

The Team Bliss Youth Sports track and field team is now recruiting members for the 2012 season. Track and field is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. Registration costs $40 for the first child and $34 for each additional child.

Spring track is under way, but registration remains open. Practices are held at Stout Track from 6-7:15 p.m. each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Running track helps build stamina, strength and speed, and provides excitement and endurance for other sports. For middle school and high school athletes, please visit www.teamblisstc.com to see how you can run both seasons.

Fort Bliss combatives team tryouts

Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division is currently forming its combatives team to compete at the Army championships. All skill and experience levels are welcome to train and try out for the team. Training takes place at the installation combatives facility, Bldg. A493, from 6-7:30 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Other training times are available for those unable to attend these sessions. The team travels to compete in both civilian and military tournaments. For more information call 744-2467. ALR unit funds

Active-duty units and mobilized Guard and Reserve units deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), or troops deployed to Haiti and in support of homeland security while serving in remote areas, are authorized unit funds through the Army Level Requirements (ALR) Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation unit fund program. Units will receive $2 per Soldier per month beginning the month of deployment. Multicultural Support Group potlucks

The Relocation Assistance Program at Army Community Service sponsors a Multicultural Support Group potluck each month. Upcoming potlucks include January 19, February 16, March 16 and April 19. The group meets from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day.

Bring a dish from your country for all to share! The Multicultural Support Group is a great was to meet new friends and try fabulous food.

Free car care clinic

Learn basic auto care, including changing oil, checking tire pressure and more at the Relocation Assistance Program Auto Care Clinic.

These free clinics are held at the Auto Crafts Center, Bldg. 820 Marshall Road. Upcoming classes are scheduled for January 26, April 27, July 17 and October 16. Classes run from 1:30-4 p.m. each day.

ACS Annex open on East Fort Bliss

Army Community Service now has two locations to better serve you: the main post location and a new annex on East Fort Bliss!

If you're out east, save time and gas by visiting the East Bliss annex at Bldg. A-479 Kasserine Rd., located between Saber and Thunderhorse roads. All ACS services are available at this location. Take advantage of full-service programs from Information and Referral, Financial Readiness, Mobilization and Deployment, Relocation Assistance, Exceptional Family Member Program and the lending closet. Limited services are offered by the Employment Readiness Program, Army Family Action Plan, Family Advocacy Program, Army Volunteer Corps, Army Family Team Building and Army Emergency Relief (located in A-478). If utilizing any of these services, call the main post ACS, Bldg. 2494 Ricker Road, determine which office can best serve you.

ASIST and ASIST Tune-Up training

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two-day interactive workshop that provides an opportunity to explore your experiences with and attitudes about suicide. In this training you will learn how to understand the needs of a person at risk of suicide, learn suicide first aid, recognize the warning signs of suicide, and learn what community resources are available. Upcoming classes are scheduled for April 18-19, may 15-16 and June 5-6.

Home-school physical education group

Beginning Tuesday, Youth Sports will host a home-school physical education group at the YouthPlex, Bldg. 195 Chaffee Road. Beginning January 31, the group will meet from 9 to 9:50 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday for elementary-aged children, or from 10:20 a.m.to 11:10 a.m. for middle- and high-school-aged children.

The group’s mission is to provide a quality physical education opportunity for home-schooled students that offers a unique variety of physical experiences.

Participation is free and open to children registered with Child, Youth and School Services. To learn more, call 568-2617.

CAFE: Cultural Awareness for Everyone

C.A.F.E. (Cultural Awareness for Everyone) is a new program designed to encourage community awareness for all Fort Bliss teens. C.A.F.E. provides teens the opportunity to learn about the culture on - and off - post. Make new friends, explore the sights, taste the food and enjoy the sounds of El Paso. These Saturday tours run from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and are open to sixth through 12th graders. Upcoming tour dates include January 28, February 25 and March 31.

Children's range safety course

The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club offers a child safety course for children ages 6-17. The class is held at 1 p.m. every second and fourth Saturday on a monthly basis. The class is held at the Rod and Gun Club and is free of charge.
