Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor play spots in the greater surrounding landscape of Fort Bliss, west Texas and southern New Mexico were born from small bands of outdoor professionals and enthusiasts. Your Fort Bliss outdoor recreation experts at Southwest Adventure continue that tradition. We provide several high and low intensity activities which offer Soldiers, veterans, friends and Family, enlisted or otherwise, the chance to get out and explore, meet new people,learn new skills, challenge themselves and relax. This upcoming season we are offering big multiday trips to Canyonlands National Park, the Chiricahua National Monument, and Colorado area ski destinations.

In addition Southwest Adventure's guided trips and activities, we also have an equipment rental program, Biggs Paintball, Tango Tower, and 9 portable disc golf baskets. If there something you need help with to plan your own adventure, just let us know and we will help you out!

The Intramurals program, group fitness classes, Strength and Conditioning/Fitness programs and Mission Essential Fitness offer more ways to have fun, get in shape and test your competitive spirit.

Intramurals
The Fort Bliss Intramural Sports calendar encompasses 44 sports and special events. The Intramural Sports Program supports the participation of approximately 6,900 active-duty military personnel.

Group Fitness
The Fort Bliss Sports Division offers a wide variety of classes to help you stay in shape. Schedules are posted monthly for group exercise classes at Soto Gym, Stout Gym and the Tennis Club and Fitness Zone.

Strength + Conditioning / Fitness
The Strength and Conditioning/Fitness program offers personal training, performance training, a "Biggest Loser" program, the Civilian Fitness Program and many more ways to get you in peak performance mode.

Mickelsen Library
Mickelsen Community Library offers more than 35,000 books on all types of subjects, including fiction; more than 90 magazines and newspapers; a reference section; interlibrary loan services; Internet access and printer services; and more. A separate children's section brings out the bookworm in kids and young adults, and offers story times from little ones ages 2-6. You must have a valid military ID or DoD civlian ID to borrow materials.

Southwest Adventure conquers the Rough and Readies

Conquer the rock! Join Southwest Adventure for an all-day climbing trip Saturday, February 25 to one of the Southwest's most popular crags.

The Rough and Readies began in 2000 as a project started by students at nearby New Mexico State University, and has since blossomed into a spot with more than 20 established routes. Routes range in difficulty and go from 30 feet to 90 feet high. There will be challenges fit for participants of any age or ability level.

Tickets cost $15 and include transportation, required equipment and guide services. Advance purchase is required. Buy tickets at any Leisure Travel Services (ITR) location: Bldg. 1743 Victory Ave., the Freedom Crossing kiosk, or the satellite location in Soto Gym, Bldg. 20751 Constitution Blvd. For more information, call (915) 433-9666.

Army Strong Wrestling

Are you a wrestler? Join the Army Strong Wrestling Team offered through Team Bliss Sports and Fitness. Registration is now open and the season begins Monday, February 27.

Army Strong Wrestling is open to active-duty military. Practices will be held at 6 p.m. each Monday at Soto Gym, with additional locations to be announced.

Mommy and Me swim classes

Mommy and Me swim classes will begin March 3 at Replica Aquatic Center. Children as young as 6 months can join in the fun, which requires a parent in the water. The classes cost $15 for a four-week session and meet from 8:30-9 a.m. each Saturday.

Spring Open Softball League

The Team Bliss Sports and Fitness Spring Open Softball League will being play Saturday, March 3. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 22 at Soto Gym.

The league is open to active-duty military, family members 18 and older (with military ID), retirees and DoD/DA civilians. Registration costs $225 per team. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of eight games. All games are played on Saturday.

Youth swim lessons at Replica

Replica Aquatic Center offers youth swim lessons. The lessons are offered in eight-week sessions and cost $35 per child. The next session will begin March 5. Lessons will be offered at the following times:

• Preschool: 2-2:45pm
• Level I: 3:30-4:15pm
• Level II/III: 4:30-5:15pm
• Level IV: 5:30-6:15pm

The class meets each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through March 19.

Civilian Fitness Program applications due March 9

The Civilian Fitness Program is an opportunity for Army civilians to develop and continue healthy lifestyle changes. The six-month, structured program is open only to civilian employees of Fort Bliss.

The six-month program begins Monday, March 26 and involves pre- and post-program fitness assessments and one-hour workouts three times a week. Guidance will be provided on exercise program design, nutrition, and aerobics, but the actual program will be determined by the participants. Group fitness classes offered include TRX, gravity, yoga, pilates, spin and more, all on a rotating schedule.

St. Patty's Day 6-Mile Race

Lace up your running shoes and be sure to wear green when you take part in the St. Patty's Day 6-Mile Race at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at Soto Gym, located at Bldg. 20751 Constitution Drive on East Fort Bliss.

The 6-Mile Saint Patty's Day Run is open to all, including the El Paso community. The first 200 runners registered will receive T-shirts. The first 100 registered are guaranteed sizes.

Age groups are 19-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-over. Early registration is now open at both Stout and Soto Gyms and online at www.active.com. Early registration is free for active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss and costs $20 for all other runners. Early registration closes Wednesday, March 14. Late registration will be held on-site from 7-7:50 a.m. the day of the event. Late registration costs and additional $10 per runner.

The St. Patty's Day 6-Mile Race is generously sponsored by USAA.

Open Flag Football League

The Team Bliss Sports and Fitness Open Flag Football League will begin play Monday, March 19. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 at Soto Gym.

The league is open to active-duty military, family members 18 and older (with military ID), retirees and DoD/DA civilians. Registration costs $200 per team. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of six games.

Gravity boot camp

Get ready for the summer with Gravity Boot Camp at the Tennis Club and Fitness Zone! Combine the total body toning benefits of a gravity workout with the fat-burning benefits of boot-camp-style training. The program is great for all fitness levels!

This six-week program begins March 20 and costs $60 per person. Classes meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 11:45 a.m. to12:45 p.m. Registration is capped at 20 participants.

Stroller off Stress

Stroller off Stress is a class designed for parents who have little ones and want to get back in shape. Parents can bring their babies to the gym with them while they get a great workout. All children must stay in their strollers at all times. Strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility are all incorporated in this six-week session, all for just $55 or two payments of $27.50.

Classes will be held at Soto Gym from 10-11 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from March 20-April 26. Register at the Soto Gym juice bar by March 20.

Army Strong Freestyle Wrestling Tournament

Team Bliss Sports and Fitness will host the Army Strong Freestyle Wrestling Tournament Saturday, March 24 at Soto Gym. Weigh-ins begin at 8 a.m. and matches begin at 9 a.m.

The tournament is open to all wrestlers ages 8 and up. Registration costs $10 per wrestler.

Medals will be awarded to first- through fourth-place finishers in each division. All competitors age 10 and under will receive medals.

Super Water Safety Days

Learn to stay safe and have fun from our Aquaheroes! Super Water Safety Days will be held Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30 at Replica Aquatic Center and Replica Child Development Center. Take advantage of a free 20-minute mini swim lesson, fun and games and great safety information from our partners with the City of El Paso, YMCA and American Red Cross.

Preschool-aged children are welcome from 9-11 a.m., and school-aged children can take part in the fun from 4:30-5:30 p.m. each day.

10K Post Championship

The Fort Bliss Intramurals 10K Post Championship will take place at 6:30 a.m. Friday, April 6 at Soto Gym on East Fort Bliss. On-site registration begins at 5:30 a.m. the day of the event.

The 10K run is open to all military ID holders and DoD/DA civilians. Registration is free for active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss and costs $10 for all others. Age groups are 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 and over.

This is a Commander's Cup event. Only active-duty results contribute to Commander's Cup standings.

Intramural paintball tournament

Set your sights on winning and compete in the 2012 Fort Bliss Paintball Post Championship Saturday, April 14 at Biggs Paintball Field. The tournament is open to active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss. Players must compete with their unit during this double-elimination tournament.

On-site registration will take place from 8-9 a.m. the day of the tournament. Play begins at 9:15 a.m. The MOI can be found at www.blissmwr.com/intramurals.

Fort Bliss combatives team tryouts

Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division is currently forming its combatives team to compete at the Army championships. All skill and experience levels are welcome to train and try out for the team. Training takes place at the installation combatives facility, Bldg. A493, from 6-7:30 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Other training times are available for those unable to attend these sessions. The team travels to compete in both civilian and military tournaments. For more information call 744-2467. Baby Bubble Hour

Baby Bubble Hour offers children ages 4 and under a chance to enjoy the water in a peaceful setting. No older children, including older siblings, are allowed in the water during this time. An open swim hour for toddlers, Baby Bubble Hour is held every Saturday from 8:30-10 a.m. at Replica Aquatic Center, Bldg. 5035 Dickman Road on Fort Bliss. For more information, call 568-7431.
