Child, Youth and School Services

31 May-22 August HIRED! Teen Apprenticeship Program

Summer term will be 31 May thru 22 August with 2 options: a Regular term working 15 hours per week or a summer term option working 30 hours per week.  15-18 years of age.  Apprenticeship opportunities at Bowling Center, Golf Course, Community Club, Outdoor Recreation, Library, Marketing, CYSS, etc.

7 June Summer Camp Activities Begin

Child Development Centers, School Age Services and Middle School & Teen.

The Start Smart Sports Development Program, a program for Youth Sports that teaches children (ages 3-5) the basic motor skills necessary to play organized sports while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with staff/volunteers.  The program focuses on teaching children and basic sports mechanics without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt.  Each day will be a different sport; Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Golf, Last day all sports.

  1. Middle School & Teen Cooking Club CYSS nutritionist will teach once a week about healthy cooking options and nutrition.  POC is Danny Nolasco, CYSS Nutritionist, (915)568-4553.

14-20 June Activities to celebrate the Army's 235th Birthday in all of our programs.

Activities will include: birthday cakes and pinatas in all of the facilities; GC and other special guests read the Army Birthday story to CDC and SAS children; Military Dog visit; children parade in red, white and blue; SAS children give speeches about Army Core Values and skits; Field trip to Fort Bliss Museum; etc.

15 June First Tee Golf Program

This golf program is free to all Military children age 7+ who have never participated before. The summer session will be Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 0800-0900, second class 0900-1000. Program will run for a total of 20 instructional hours.  For more information please contact 568-8336.

16 June- until the last week before school starts

Fun activities and lunch will be provided at Kelly Park every Wednesday. POC is Elizabeth Bernal at 569-5040.

 

28 June-3 July OPERATION PURPLE CAMP

Operation Purple Camp ages 9-15, children of service members of any branch of Service, active duty, National Guard or Reserve, Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

FREE week of Camp at Lone Tree Camp, New Mexico.

Operation Purple Camp Application is now available at http://www.militaryfamily.org until 16 April 2010.

29 July 2010 EDUCATION FAIR

Education Fair at Centennial Banquet and Conference Center from 0830-1100 am.

 

The Education Fair is your one-stop shop for information. Military Leadership along with El Paso Area School Administrators from over sixty Public, Parochial and Private schools (grades K-12) around Fort Bliss will be in attendance to welcome new families, pass out information and answer questions at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center on Biggs Army Airfield. Representatives from numerous departments such as Magnet Schools, Athletic Departments, Advanced Academics, Transportation, Career & Technology, Fine Arts, JROTC, Special Education, Gifted and Talented Programs, Pupil Services, Health Services and Food Services from the different school districts will all be in attendance. 12-15 August FREEDOM CAMP

Freedom Camp, ages 11-15.

$30 Registration Fee.

Application will be available early May and will be accepted through 7 Jun 2010. They will be able at both CYSS locations, Bldg 1743 Victory Rd Room 220, Bldg 503B and at www.blissmwr.com.

Taking place at Lone Tree Ranch, NM. POC is Debbie Trexler at 568-2784.  Modules on coping, resiliency, positive psychology, and optimism will be key elements of the camp in order to help them understand and cope with the effect of war, deployments and reunification. Available to Active duty, Reserve and National Guard children of all Services.

16-21 July Missoula Theatre Group

Missoula Theatre Group will be here for one week during the summer, awaiting confirmation dates. Spend a week with youth doing theater workshops and rehearsing for play that is performed at the end of the week. POC is Gwen Gale 569-5791/5784.

FMWR is proud to offer discounted rates for children's art classes at the Creative Kids oLo Gallery.

 Little Picassos, $10 per session: Creative Kids has designed an early-access-to-art curriculum for children 3-6 years old. This specialized class is taught by a certified child-life specialist, giving children the opportunity to discover and express themselves through different activities that include art, rhythm, movement and even preparing their own snack Classes are held from 10 a.m.-noon on each class date. The course fee includes all materials and a snack.

Project SAC (Saturday Art Classes), $15 per session: Project SAC is open for youth ages 7-18. The studio art classes provide culturally sensitive art-mediated opportunities for positive development and expression for youth with a predisposition for the arts. Classes take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on each class date.

Both classes are held at the Creative Kids oLo Gallery, located at 504 San Francisco St. in the Union Plaza district of downtown El Paso. These special rates are available for children of military ID card holders and can be received only by booking through Fort Bliss ITR. For more information, call 568-7506.

Fort Bliss Arts and Crafts Program

Fort Bliss Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, in partnership with the El Paso Museum of Art, offers arts and crafts classes to the Fort Bliss community. The classes are open to all military ID card holders and Family members ages 15 and up, as well as DoD civilians, and are offered at drastically reduced prices.

All classes are for beginnners. Register for classes at ITR, Bldg. 1743 on Victory Avenue (915) 568-1506 or (915)568-3208. Class seats are limited; register early to ensure placement. Supplies are included in the cost of the class unless otherwise specified.

Free ice skating

Fort Bliss Youth Sports and El Paso Rhinos are offering free afterschool Ice Skating/Hockey sessions for all CYSS children. Equipment is provided.

Fort Bliss Got Talent - Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26 - tba - Centennial

This will be a four week single elimination contest featuring the most talented performers that Fort Bliss has to offer. Talents will be showcased on stage at the Centennial Club in front of a live audience and judged by a panel of three local television and radio celebrities and business owners. Contestants will compete for cash prizes and a grand prize to be decided at later date. This competition is open to soldiers, veterans and their family members 16 and older.

Fort Bliss MWR will be hosting a live concert this summer open to Fort Bliss and the community of El Paso. This event is held at Biggs Park in appreciation to all military service members and their families for their dedication and commitment to the United States. Activities include food and beverage vendors, jumping balloons, children’s games, beer garden, dunk tank and an entire day of family fun. The event ends with a spectacular fireworks display. This is one of our largest events and we encourage all of our sponsors to join us for a great day!

The George V. Underwood Golf Complex will host the MWR Long Drive Championship an official Long Drivers of America (LDA) qualifier. Cost is $10 per try with local installation prizes for first through third place. Only Active Duty service members, Reserve and National Guard both active and inactive are eligible to compete. Women who enter the competition will be spotted 65 additional yards on their qualified drives

Army Community Service

 

1-3 June, 6-8 July, 3-5 August People Encouraging People (PEP)

This is a three day newcomer’s orientation geared towards spouses. The first day is an informational class room day with lunch at the DFAC. The second day is a tour of Fort Bliss, Biggs Army Airfield, WBAMC, and a tour throughout El Paso with shopping downtown. The third day is a trip to Mesilla, N.M.  Call ACS at 568-1132 to reserve your seat. Child care will be paid for all who are registered with the CDC.

16-18 June Youth Leadership

In partnership with CYS and Balfour Beatty, we are planning to implement the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute from June 16th -18th. The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI) is a unique training program designed to help prepare young people for leadership roles in their communities. Youth Leadership institute will include such topics as: Introduction to Community Service, Team Communication, Leadership 101 and Decision Making. PYLI is open to Military ID Cardholders & youth whose parents are employed on the installation.

 

27 July  Back to School Backpack Program at ACS Ballroom

Back to School Backpack Program    August  - 1400  - ACS

The need is great to help our young Soldier Families as the children prepare to return to school. This donation program helps offset the expenses Families face as they prepare their children for the school year. Free back to school backpacks filled with basic school supplies will be given to nominated children between 6 and 12 years of age at the ACS ballroom.  This program is looking for funds to help with the backpacks or a donation of school supplies is gladly accepted. We welcome donations in the denomination of 600. Backpacks are greatly appreciated.

 

 

11-12 August Marriage Seminar “So Happy Together” at Centennial

The Marriage Seminar is a 2 day activity based workshop for couples.  Although we encourage couples to attend together we don't have a problem with individuals coming alone.  Topics include:   Forgiveness, Problem Solving, Communication and Stress.

 

20 August Bienvenidos a Bliss at Centennial 1300-1700

Bienvenidos a Bliss Relocation Fair   Aug. 20 - 1pm-5pm - Centennial

A great way to welcome newcomers, this event showcases the resources from the ACS, MWR and various support agencies of the Fort Bliss community. Soldiers and their families will have the opportunity to meet with both on-post agencies and off-post businesses.

This seven-month worldwide tour arrives at Fort Bliss for performances in August. The Soldier Show is a musical production reflecting the reasons American Soldiers serve as they do and how they display esprit de corps the Army Strong way.  Fort Bliss offers this show free of charge to Fort Bliss Soldiers, their families and the surrounding El Paso community.
